The world’s biggest wildlife survey, the Big Garden Birdwatch is the RSPB’s annual healthcheck on the nation’s avian life. And it’s really easy to take part; all you have to do is visit your local park or head into your garden for one hour, and record what birds you see. It’s all happening next weekend (Jan 26-27), so you have plenty of time to get organised and prepared. There are events leading up to the event, including bird watches at Rainham Marshes in Essex and bird nest crafts at the Horniman Museum.
Registration for the Birdwatch is free (although you must be over 18 to sign up), and you can request a free help pack, as well as get a £5 voucher for the RSPB shop. There’s also a free identification sheet to download from here.
And, if the birds are a little, uh, slow to turn up, there are loads of downloadable activities and ideas for bird-related crafts here.
