Pancake Day

Hurray! Next Tuesday is one of our favourite festivals, Pancake Day. Why? Because it’s all about the eating. Yes, we know that it marks the start of Lent’s six weeks of self-denial , but, tonight it’s all about the batter and lemon. If you’re around on Tuesday, there are some great events in London to mark Shrove Tuesday. Watch crazily dressed teams flip their pancakes in Spitalfields at 12.30pm, or head over the river to see how they do it in the south at Bankside at midday. Meanwhile Greenwich Market has some more ambitious events, including a children’s race at 4pm. If you’d rather eat your pancakes than flip them, we love The Breakfast Club‘s battery, buttery golden discs (especially with bacon and maple syrup).

If you’d rather make your own, Delia always gets them right, and here’s a guide to tossing them. You can’t go wrong with lemon juice and sugar, but there are some lovely topping ideas here too.
