London’s largest dedicated children’s literature festival takes place May 14-15. This year it’s doubled in size, with more than fifty sessions taking place around Barnes Pond. Authors and illustrators appearing include former Children’s Laureates Jacqueline Wilson and Anthony Browne, Charlie and Lola creator Lauren Child, Costs Book Award winner Frances Hardinge, Philip Reeve, Emily Gravett, CBeebies’ Cerrie Burnell, Danny Wallace, Joseph Coelho, and beloved Gruffalo illustrator Axel Scheffler. We are incredibly excited about upcoming book Pop!, Jude Rogers’ zippy kids guide to music from the 1950s to the present day. Kid rave masterminds Big Fish Little Fish will be celebrating the book’s publication at their party on February 7 at Shapes in Hackney Wick. With a never-dumbed-down music policy, kids and adults come together to get their groove on to dancefloor classics – the aim is for it to be “like the coolest wedding reception ever”. This month’s event at Elephant and Castle, is animal-themed and features DJ Mark Force, plus experts from the Museum of London with artefacts to handle. Plus, as ever, there’s a baby-friendly chill-out room, a fantastic crafts area, glitter cannons, bubbles and awesome goodie bags. Big Fish Little Fish put on some of the best kid raves in London – the music is uncomprising but still party central, there are free glowsticks, great crafts, bubble machines and lights. Plus free smoothies and snacks for all! They have a Where The Wild Things Are themed party in Brixton on February 15, and one in Crouch End on February 22, featuring DJing from one of our musical heros, Jonny Trunk, plus loads more upcoming dates.
